If you are not looking to invest heavily into trail shoes then a minimalist shoe such as the Saucony Peregrine might be a worthy choice. Based on the popular road shoe Saucony Kinvara, this shoe was launched in mid February 2011 amidst a flurry of critical acclaim. While it has the basic requirements for a trail shoe with its spikes and tough sole, it does not do away with foot protection and therefore provides a great overall feel even after a few hours of wearing it.
Weighing in at just over 10 ounces, this minimalistic trail blazer is true to size, light to wear yet offering sufficient protection to the wearer. Furthermore, it is an ideal companion on trails for those suffering from low to medium over pronation condition.
The shoes sole features a small heel to toe drop of 18mm to 14mm along with adequate padding inside to provide an agile support for long treks on trail tracks. Saucony has gone with its customary sole support foams, the SSL (Saucony Super Lite) in the front and the Progrid lite in the heel. All this translates to a good medial support for over pronators.
The outsole is the main attraction of this shoe. With small ridges and lugs aggressively positioned all over the outsole, the Saucony Peregrine offers substantial grip on muddy and rocky surfaces. Made out of tough carbon fiber material, the outsole is built to last longer. However, because of the aggressive use of furrows and ridges, the shoe caught a lot of mud and rock which was sometimes hard to get off during the trek.
With a combination of leather webbing and a synthetic closed mesh, the upper of the Saucony Peregrine provides adequate protection from the environment as well as keeping the foot well ventilated. The heel is positioned quite low compared to other shoes and is well padded to provide proper cushioning and 360 degree movement. While the toe box on most Saucony shoes offer little room to wriggle toes in, the Kinvara and Peregrine lines have a wider box with sufficient room for the toes to breathe. Although the shoe feels warm in hot climates, it does however stand up well against snow, rain and other environmental factors.
Priced at just $90 these minimalistic http://www.runningshoesguru.com/">Saucony running shoes perform just as well on road tracks as they do on trials. Unlike most minimalistic shoes, it does not do away with technology but still offers a lightweight trekking solution. The Saucony Peregrine is a shoe built to last on all surfaces.
